Jesus’s last journey was from the place where he was tried and condemned by the Roman governor, Pontius Pilate, to the place where he was crucified outside the walls of the city of Jerusalem. Pilgrims going to the city have, for over fifteen hundred years, followed his route as an act of devotion, stopping at a number of places to pray. We know where he was tried and where he was crucified; the other stopping places or ‘stations’ are reconstructions of what might have happened. In any case it has been a custom to undertake a little pilgrimage in churches, keeping the same stations. At St Mary’s this custom was revived nearly a hundred years ago and this year, 2010, the devotion is undertaken on Fridays in Lent: 19 and 26 February, 5 and 26 March at 7 pm. We offer this virtual pilgrimage to visitors to the website so that you may get a taste of what we are about and receive some spiritual benefit too. |
